First and last sentences of chapters (Foote and Quirk, ed. And trans.)

1. Þorsteinn hét maðr; hann var Egilsson, Skalla-Grímssonar, Kveld-Úlfssonar hersis ór Nóregi, en Ásgerðr hét móðir Þorsteins ok var Bjarnardóttir.

There was a man called Thorstein who was the son of Egil Skalla-Grímsson. Skalla-Grím was the son of Kveld-Úlf, a chieftain from Norway. Thorsteinʼs mother was called Asgerd and she was the daughter of Björn.

Þau Þorsteinn áttur mart barna, en þó koma fá við þessa sögu; Skúli var ellstr sona þeira, annar Kossveinn, þriði Egill.

She and Thorstein had many children though few come into this saga; their eldest son was Skuli, the next Kollsvein and the third Egil.

2. Eitt sumar er þat sagt at skip kom af hafi í Gufuárós.

The story goes that one summer a ship put in from sea into the mouth of the Gufuá.

Þorsteinn lagði fæð á Austmanninn, ok fór hann á brott um sumarit ok er hann nú ór sögunni.

Thorstein turned against him after this; he went away in the summer and appears no more in the story.

3. Um sumarit bjósk Þorsteinn til þings, ok mælti til Jófriðar húsfreyju áðr hann fór heiman, Svá er háttat, segir hann, át þú ert með barni, ok skal þat barn út bera ef þú fæðir meybarn, en upp fæða ef sveinn er.

In the summer, Thorstein got ready for the assembly, and before he left he spoke to his wife Jófrid: Now itʼs so, he said, that you are going to have a child, and if you have a girl, it must be put out to die, but if itʼs a boy, then itʼs to be brought up.

Þorsteinn var þaðan út leiddr með góðm gjöfum, ok reið Helga heim með honum, ok fæddisk þar upp með mikilli virðing ok ást af föður ok móður ok öllum.

Thorstein was given fine gifts when he left, and Helga rode home with him and grew up there, greatly loved and treasured by her father and mother and all her kin.

4. Þenna tíma bjó uppi á Hvítársíðu á Gilsbakka Illugi svarti Hallkelsson Hrosskelssonar; móðir Illuga var Þuríður dylla, dóttir Gunnlaugs ormstungu.

At that time at Gilsbakki in Hvítársída there lived Illugi the Black, the son of Hallkel Hrosskelsson. Illugiʼs mother was Thurid Sow-thistle, the daughter of Gunnlaug Serpent-Tongue.

Ok varð mönnum mikit gaman at þessu, þeim er við váru staddir.

The people present were much amused at this.

5. Önundr hét maðr er bjó suðr at Mosfelli.

There was a man called Önund who lived south at Mosfell.

Ok er þeim gaf byr, létu þeir í haf, ok kómu skipi sínu norðr við Nóreg ok sigldu inn eptir Þrándheimi til Niðaróss ok lágu þar í lægi ok skipuðu upp.

And when they got a favourable wind they put to sea and brought their ship to the north of Norway. They sailed along the coast of Thrandheim to Nidaros, and berthed there and unloaded.

6. Þenna tíma réð fyrir Nóregi Eiríkr jarl Hákonarson ok Sveinn bróðir hans.

At that time Earl Eric, the son of Hakon, and his brother Svein ruled Norway.

Nú sigla þeir Gunnlaugr í Englandshaf ok kómu um haustit suðr við Lundúnbryggjur, ok réðu þar til hlunns skip sínu.

Gunnlaug and Thorkel then sailed into the North Sea and arrived in the autumn in the port of London, where they hauled their ship ashore.

7. Þá réð fyrir Englandi Aðalráðr konungr Játgeirsson ok var góðr höfðingi.

At that time King Ethelred, the son of Edgar, ruled England and was a good prince.

En því skaltu heita mér, segir konungr, át koma aptr til min at öðru hausti, fyrir því at ek vil eigi láta þik fyrir sakir íþrótta þinna ok vaskleiks.

But you must promise to return next autumn, because I donʼt want to lose you, on account of your accomplishments and courage.

8. Síðan siglir Gunnlaugr af Englandi með kaupmönnum norðr til Dyflinnar. Þá réð fyrir Irlandi Sigtryggr konung silkisegg…

Gunnlaug then sailed with some merchants northwards from England to Dublin. At that time Ireland was ruled by King Sigtrygg Silken Beard…

Sigurðr jarl fekk Gunnlaugi leiðtoga austr í Tíundaland í Svíðjóð, sem hann beiddi.

At Gunnlaugʼs request, Earl Sigurd procured him a guide to go east into Tiundaland in Sweden.

9. Þenna tíma réð fyrir Svíþjóð Óláfr konungr sænski, sonr Eiriks konungs sígrsæla ok Sigríðar innar stórráðu, dóttur Sköglar-Tósta.

At this time, Sweden was ruled by King Ólaf the Swede, the son of King Eric the Conqueror and Sigrid the Ambitious, the daughter of Tósti the Warlike.

Eptir þat, riðu menn heim af þinginu. Ok frestaðisk tilkváma Gunnlaugs, en Helga hugði illt til ráða.

After that men rode home from the assembly, and still Gunnlaugʼs return was delayed. Helga loathed the thought of this marriage.

10. Nú er at segja frá Gunnlaugi at hann fór af Svíþjóðu þat sumar til Englands er Hrafn fór til Íslands, ok þá góðar gjafir af Óláfi konungi at skilnaði þeira.

To return now to Gunnlaug, we find that he received good parting gifts from King Olaf and left Sweden for England during the summer in which Hrafn went to Iceland.

Hallfreðr reið heim um morgininn til Hreðuvatns í Norðrárdal. Þar réð fyrir eignum þeira Gjalti, bróðir hans, ok var vask maðr.

Hallfred rode home next morning to Hreduvatn in Nordrárdal. His brother Galti, a fine man, was in charge of their property there.

11. Nú er at segja frá Hrafni at hann sat at brúðlaupi sínu at Borg, ok er þat flestra manna sögn at brúðrin væri held döpr.

Now there is Hrafnʼs story to tell. As he sat at his wedding feast at Borg, most people have it that the bride was somewhat dejected.

Þetta þótti frædndum hvárstveggja þeira stórum illa, en fengu þó ekki at gört fyrir ákafa þeira sjálfra; enda varð þat fram at koma sem til dró.

The kinsmen of both of them were greatly upset at this, but on account of their passion they could do nothing to stop it; and after all, what fate has decreed could not be prevented.

12. Nú er at segja frá Hrafni at hann bjó skip sitt í Leiruvágnum.

Now it is to be told of Hrafn that he made ready his ship in Leiruvag.

Öllum þótti mikill skaði at um hvárntveggja þeira, Gunnlaug ok Hrafn, með þeim atburðum sem varð um líflát þeira.

The death of both Gunnlaug and Hrafn in these circumstances seemed a terrible loss to everyone.

13. Ok um sumarit, áðr þessi tíðeni spurþusk út hingat til Íslands, þá dreymði Illuga svarta, ok var hann þá heima á Gilsbakka.

In the summer, before news of this was heard out here in Iceland, Illugi the Black had a dream while at home at Gilsbakki.

Ok lýkr þar nú sögunni.

And there the saga ends.
